Moving to Squarespace

Squarespace is a publishing platform for easier website management. I heard about it first in Diggnation, but the platform was developed already in 2003. I guess they have started to advertise it more or I just have been on the blank about it.

I have a long history of writing HTML on a textpad and then on the Adobe Dreamweawer which made things WYSIWYG, but at the same time preserved the possibility to write bare code. Later, I have been involved in content management systems (CMS) like Joomla which makes it easy to update your web page directly on browser and also all dynamic content is lot more easier to include without any coding background. Squarespace is a step forward from that. It has a low learning curve and the interface guides you through all steps of publishing content, changing the structure of page and modifying the template. Also you still have a chance to do some hand coding and so called 'code injections'.

Squarespace is a publishing engine and a web hosting service at the same time. It's a smart business model where company gets funding for the whole package than just a CMS engine alone. If they would sell the publishing part separately, someone could abuse the stand alone program and distribute it illegally. Selling the CMS as part of the hosting service prevents that situation. It is also beneficial for the honest users who get to use CMS which is always updated and controlled.

So far the experience with Squarespace has been a good one. I still have things to figure out, but so far it has been fun to learn this new style of site management.
